Sometimes, it seems as though I side with the minority when it comes to my reviews of Bourbon; and here we are on another bad note… Coming from the Barton 1792 Distillery, the seven (7) bottle lineup of 1792 Bourbon Whiskey is well-liked and praised by many. Although I have not officially reviewed any of these bottles, I have had the pleasure of either owning or trying four (4) of them over the last year. The previous three bourbons, with this bottle being the fourth, all seemed to be average or Mix It! by my rating scale; until this one. With that said, today I am reviewing my fourth bottle from the Barton 1792 Distillery; 1792 Aged Twelve Years.

From the Barton 1792 Distillery website: Twelve years is a long time to wait, but patience has its rewards. Starting with our signature “high rye” recipe, this impeccable bourbon whiskey is the satisfying result of maturing for more than a decade in the finest charred American white oak barrels. Rich flavors of vanilla and cocoa abound in this full-bodied bourbon. After spending twelve years in oak, the delicate fruit notes in this whiskey are met with a lingering smoky finish that is more complex than most.

*Reader beware, this, unfortunately, was not a pleasant whiskey for me, however, do not let this discourage you from trying this whiskey as well; but I would recommend you try it at a bar first.

Overall, I, unfortunately, did not enjoy this bottle of bourbon whiskey from the Barton 1792 Distillery. Perhaps I purchased a “spoiled” bottle of this twelve-year bourbon, but the nose for me was so off-putting with strong notes of turpentine, almost like I was cleaning paint bushes in the garage again, that I could not enjoy the rest of the experience. Adding this unpleasantness to a lack of character on the palate, and then throwing a highly inflated price with a lack of availability in NoCo, caused a regrettable trifecta. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Unpleasant Turpentine with Slight Notes of Ethanol, Vanilla, and Oak
  • Palate: Medicinal Cherry Sweetness, Slight Vanilla, Baking Spices, Strong Dry Oak
  • Finish: Medium with Spice and the Driest of Oak
  • 2023 MSRP: $49
  • 2023 National Average: $189
  • Proof: 96.6
  • My Rating: Pour it! (A lack of character, unpleasant notes, and the inflated pricing of this bottle is an unfortunate trifecta)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
