It should be no surprise to anyone who regularly reads this blog that Bardstown Bourbon Company is by far my favorite distillery, for many reasons. Having already reviewed the first three bottles in their new Origin Series, I was quite excited when they announced the fourth. Although I am not a fan of wheat or high-wheated bourbons, I was hopeful that this distillery would be able to change my mind. Today’s review comes from the Bardstown Bourbon Company and is the Bardstown Bourbon Company Origin Series High Wheat.

Estate-distilled, aged and bottle on-site; enjoy the unmatched character and elegance of High Wheat.

I am not sure why it took so long for this bottle to make it to the NoCo area, but I am glad it is finally here. Now quite readily available throughout my area, I believe Bardstown Bourbon Company has created a monster lineup with their new Origin Series. Overall, this is the best bourbon in the series and gives the rye release a run for its money; that was my favorite bottle until now. With an amazing vanilla cream frosting note topped with orange zest and red hots, this sip brought back memories of one of my favorite childhood cupcakes from the early ’90s. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Caramel, Vanilla Cream Frosting, Orange Peel, and Baking Spice
  • Palate: Vanilla Cream, Baking Spice, Cinnamon Red Hots, Caramel, Orange Zest, and Sweet Oak
  • Finish: Medium with Wonderful Notes of Sweet Oak, Vanilla, and Warming Cinnamon
  • My Rating: Drink It! (I am not typically a fan of high wheat bourbon…but Bardstown has changed my mind!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
