Every once in a while all the stars align and the bourbon gods will shine down on you while out bourbon hunting. This fortunately happened to Mrs. Bourbon Bossman and I shortly after the holidays. We were luckily enough to stumble upon three amazing Michter’s bottles at MSRP in three different locations. One of these bottles I was able to obtain in 2023, however today’s and Friday’s bottles I have not seen since 2021. Today’s review comes from the Michter’s Distillery and is the 2024 release of Michter’s US★1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon.

Bottle Information

From the Michter’s website: First introduced to great acclaim in the Fall of 2014, Michter’s US★1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is a groundbreaking whiskey expression. It is made by taking Michter’s US★1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and then aging it for an additional period in a second custom made barrel. This second barrel is assembled from 18-month air-dried wood and then toasted but not charred. The truly unique and delicious taste of Michter’s US★1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon represents a remarkable achievement given that it is Kentucky Straight Bourbon with nothing extra added or done except placement in a second toasted barrel.

As I mentioned above, I have not seen this bottle since 2021, and it brought back a lot of memories as it was also the second bottle I reviewed as Bourbon Bossman. If you interested, you can view that review year HERE and see how much or little someone’s palate can change and develop over three years. As mentioned three years ago, this is still quite an elusive bottle in NoCo, and I am glad I was able to have a second chance at reviewing it.

Overall, this bottle was a vanilla, red fruit, and sweet oak bomb with that classic marshmallow taste that many often find on toasted bourbons. I have had my ups and downs with toasted bourbons, but Michter’s provides an excellent example of how good a toasted bourbon can be. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Vanilla, Toasted Oak, Caramel, Marshmallow, Brown Sugar, and Red Fruit
  • Palate: Sweet and Oakey with Notes of Vanilla, Marshmellow, Baking Spice, Strawberry/Raspberry, and Ever-So-Slight Milk Chocolate
  • Finish: Short to Maybe Medium with Notes of Sweet Toasted Oak and Baking Spice
  • My Rating: Drink It! (This is an excellent example of how good a toasted bourbon can be!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
