Unfortunately, not every Bourbon, Rye, or Whiskey can be your favorite, nor can all of them be the best product out there. Sometimes a certain product or maybe just that bottle might not work with your palate, and that is fine. This week has been one of those weeks where the Manic Monday post was a bottle I did not enjoy, this bottles was not my jam, and if foreshadowing can tell us anything, Friday might be a disappointment as well. Today’s review comes from the James B. Beam Distilling Co. and is Baker’s Single Barrel High Rye Bourbon.

From the James B. Beam website: From mashbill to still to rickhouse to bottle, a lot of things happen with Baker’s® Single Barrel Bourbon. Weather, length of aging and rickhouse placement all shape the distinct notes and flavors of each barrel. See how and where your bottle was born.

No two barrels of Baker’s are the same. Each is as unique as the man the bourbon is named for. Each barrel sits in its own unique place throughout our rickhouses, patiently aging for a minimum of seven years to extract the notes of vanilla trapped within the charred oak. And with Baker’s there’s no batching or mixing. Each bottle is filled from one singular barrel. Which means inside each bottle is a big, bold bourbon, full of tiny subtle details that change barrel to barrel.

With that said, let’s get our taste on!

This is a bottle that I picked up while visiting the James B. Beam Distillery last October and I have been putting off reviewing it for several months now. I am not a fan of writing less-than-stellar reviews, but it is also important to show that not every bottle of bourbon is good. This is not to say that you might not like this bottle, but my palate does not enjoy it. Overall, the tasting notes below are a stretch as I literally forced myself to sip another two ounces just to try and give some type of notes. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Nutty, Grain Forward, Ethanol, Green Apple, Rye Spice, and Oak
  • Palate: Ethanol, Nutty, Oak, Rye Spice, Vanilla, and Slight Acetone
  • Finish: Medium With Tons of Heat Leading into a Strong Bitter Nuttiness, Rye Spice, and the ever-so-slight Peanut Toffee
  • My Rating: Donate It! (Sometimes a product just does not match up with you palate… and Baker’s is not my Jam)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
