Although I decided to skip the 2023 annual release of this bottle after reading several reviews, I decided to take a chance on the 2024 release. As of writing this, I have seen very little reviews from the typical sources which makes me wonder if the following of this distiller is starting to dwindle. Today’s review comes from the Ross & Squibb Distillery and is the Remus Repeal Reserve Series VIII.
Bottle Information
From the Remus Bourbon website: Introducing Remus Repeal Reserve® Series VIII, the latest edition of the award-winning Remus Repeal Reserve collection. Featuring a medley of three bourbons aged since 2007 – 2014, Series VIII is crafted to honor the repeal of Prohibition on December 5, 1933. The oldest Remus Repeal Reserve ever at 10-17 years, Master Distiller Ian Stirsman has also made a few updates for Series VIII.
“We did a couple things different for Remus Repeal Reserve Series VIII,” Stirsman noted. “First, once we finalized the blend, we blind-tasted it at different proofs, with the 101 proof being the favorite. We also returned to non-chill filtration to increase the mouthfeel, and went with a higher proportion of the high-rye recipe bourbon than in years’ past.”

Perhaps I was lucky in finding the 2024 Remus Repeal VIII as I have not seen another bottle in since. Throughout NoCo there are still several bottles of the Remus Repeal VII sitting on shelves, however, I do apologize as I will not be reviewing the 2023 release. However, this 2024 release is worth every penny of the MSRP! Overall, this release is a beautifully balanced bourbon that does waver on the sweet side yet provides just the right amount of spice. I’ve been waiting for another bottle to show up since Remus Repeal V, and although not quite at that level, this is an amazing pour! With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Maple Donut Bar, Caramel Drizzle, Cherry, Apple Juice, Vanilla, and Oak
- Palate: Caramel, Baking Spice, Maple, Cherry, Vanilla, Cinnamon, and Oak
- Finish: Medium with Lasting Notes of Dry Oak and Cinnamon
- My Rating: Drink It!/Save It! (I’ve been waiting for another bottle to show up since Remus Repeal V, and although not quite at that level, this is an amazing pour!)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
