For years now I have heard amazing things about a small bourbon company located in Louisville. When visiting Kentucky in 2021, I was lucky enough to try two pours of this amazing bourbon at the Brown Hotel for our 15th anniversary but was unsuccessful in acquiring a bottle. Then a few days before Christmas of 2023, a bottle appeared on one of the shelves of a local store in NoCo and the rest is history. Today’s bottle is produced by the Old Carter Whiskey Co. and is Old Carter Whiskey Co. Straight Bourbon Whiskey Colorado Batch 1.

Bottle Information

From the Old Carter Whiskey Co. website: At Old Carter Whiskey Co., we take pride in crafting exceptional whiskies that capture the essence of time-honored traditions. We will be releasing small batch, very small batch and single barrel expressions throughout the year as the barrels tell us when they are ready. Each expression is bottled at barrel strength without chill filtration, allowing you to experience the whiskey’s true character and spirit.

As I mentioned above, until Christmas of 2023 this distillery did not offer bottles to the Colorado market. Unfortunately, the key lineup is still not found here, but it was a nice surprise to find this special release as a Christmas gift. Since then, these bottles have disappeared, and those in NoCo are left having to travel to Kentucky to try these again.

Overall, this is the first bottle of Old Carter I have owned and the third bottle from Old Charter I have been able to try; yet again it did not disappoint! Although a bit pricey of a bottle, I would say the previous pours I have had are worth every penny. Unfortunately, this bottle left a little to be desired, but still offered those amazing classic bourbon notes of vanilla, and brown sugar, rounded off by a dark fruity sweet spice. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Fuji Apple, Baking Spice, Cinnamon, and Oak
  • Palate: Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Caramel, Dark Cherry, Apple, Raspberry, Cinnamon, Barrel Char, and Oak
  • Finish: Medium to Long with Notes of Bright Fruity Cherry and Apple Leading into Leather and Dry Oak
  • My Rating: Drink It! (This is the third bottle from Old Charter I have been able to try, and yet again it did not disappoint!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
