I will be the first to admit that I am typically not the first person to reach for a flavored whiskey or one blended with another spirit. However, while picking up the new Templeton Fortitude Bourbon that was reviewed last week, I said what the heck as I am a fan of both rye whiskey and port wine. Today’s review is from Templeton Rye Spirits and is their newer Review of Templeton Midnight Rye.

Bottle Information

From the Templeton Distillery website: A unique whiskey, meticulously aged and matured in first-fill American oak barrels and with a touch of port wine expertly layered in and bottled at 45% ABV / 90 proof. The marriage of the rich port wine with the classic rye backbone results in a luxurious texture that invites contemplation with every sip.

Like most Templeton products, this bottle and the Templeton Fortitude Bourbon can be found on shelves throughout NoCo with ease. However, unlike the Fortitude, I am actually in love with this rye whiskey mixed with port wine; I know it is not a bourbon and not even a rye, but it’s a damn good rye and port wine blend! Overall, this bottle provides what I would call an excellent after dinner or dessert pour that brings the best of both worlds from a rye whiskey and port wine. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Dark Fruits, Berries, Brown Sugar, Port Wine, and Fig Newton
  • Palate: Vanilla, Fig or Raisin, Brown Sugar, Tart Port Tanins, and Dry Oak
  • Finish: Very Short and Soft with Notes of Figs and Dry Oak
  • My Rating: Drink It! (I know it is not a bourbon and not even a rye, but it’s a damn good rye and port wine blend!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!

  1. Thanks for the insightful article! I found the Templeton Midnight Rye to have a unique blend of dark cherry and fig aromas, with a palate that balances cinnamon, clove, and a touch of dark chocolate.
