Silverthorn Reserve is a new Distillery venture by Drew Thorn, who previously held a decade-long post as COO/CFO, then CEO at Sagamore Spirit, the highly successful rye whiskey producer out of Maryland. Currently, Silverthorn sources whiskey from Georgia, Indiana, and Kentucky, seeking to primarily blend whiskeys in the age range of 10-15 years, although this is not a strict rule. With over six expressions from this distillery, this new release is from their Blender’s Art Series, which “showcases the art of blending, combining whiskeys from different sources, ages, and mashbills to create distinctive flavor profiles.”
Huge shout-out to Silverthorn Reserve for sending today’s bottle and to their public relations specialist Nino, for reaching out. As a reminder, these samples were sent to me with no strings attached, so as always, this review will truly be my opinion of the product, no matter what. Today’s review comes from the Silverthorn Reserve Distillery and is Batch 1 of their new release, Silverthorn Reserve Blender’s Art The Rye Blend.
Bottle Information
From the Silverthorn Reserve Distillery website: This blend of 8 barrels brings together 13Y high-rye, with 10Y high-rye, 10Y low-rye, and 1 barrel of 10Y high-rye double oak. The nose is reminiscent of a cinnamon pastry with vanilla icing. The pallet moves from caramels and brown sugar into soft baking spices before seamlessly finishing with rich, sweet oak.

Although it’s not currently available in the NoCo area, Silverthorn Reserve Distillery ships to most of the U.S. if you are interested. It’s been a while since I have experienced a rye nose like this, as it and the initial palate are very herbal and minty, almost overpowering the other notes at times. Overall, if you can get past the very rye-forward herbal nose, this drinks very much like a bourbon lover’s rye. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Herbal Mint Galore with Hidden Notes of Oak, Green Apple, and Rye/Baking Spice
- Palate: Brown Sugar, Rye Spice, Mint, and Oak
- Finish: Beautifully Long with Lasting Notes of Spiced Cacao and Dry Oak
- My Rating: Mix It/Drink It! (Although the nose is very rye-forward, this drinks very much like a bourbon lover’s rye)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
