I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving Day with either loved ones, friends, family, or with a wonderful bottle of bourbon! Today’s review is of a bottle I would typically not spend the money on, as I have tried this at several bars and I find it to be a bit over-priced for what it offers. Nonetheless, I purchased this because of a wonderful gift certificate I was given several months back as a birthday gift; thank you again to that person! Today’s bottle is from the WhistlePig Distillery and is their WhistlePig Old World Rye Aged 12 Years.
From the WhistlePig website: WhistlePig’s vanguard of finishing lies within our Old World Rye, Aged 12 Years. A Rye styled by Old World sensibilities at 86-proof. This whiskey is the marriage of three finishes, each with their own distinctive flavor profiles. After maturing for 12 years in New American Oak, the spirit is divvied into one of three barrels –Madeira (63%), Sauternes (30%) and Port (7%). Finished to perfection and blended into a symphony of flavor. It started as a grand experiment and ended as the first Rye whiskey of its kind, giving you Rye in all its glory… and then some. Just like a fine wine, our Old World Rye’s rich fruit and spice notes are great with an epic meal.
Let me reiterate, this is an excellent bottle of rye whiskey, I just wished it was priced a bit lower. This is one of the core bottles for WhistlePig and is now quite available throughout NoCo. Overall, this bottle is what I think of when someone asks what is a good fall whiskey that pairs nicely with Thanksgiving dinner. With a great balance of rye spices and sweet dark fruits, this is an amazing bottle and would be stellar if priced just a bit lower. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Rye Spice, Bread Dough, Dill, Brown Sugar, Oak, Figs, and Dark Fruits
- Palate: Brown Sugar, Rye Spice, Cinnamon, Stewed Fruits, Caramel, and Oak
- Finish: Medium in Length ending in Oak, Rye Spice, and Caramel
- 2023 MSRP: $120
- 2023 National Average: $179
- Proof: 86
- My Rating: Drink It! (An amazing pour, but a bit overpriced)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
