Here we are again, being influenced by many of the articles I read and the YouTubers I watch. In the past I have reviewed, and also have reviews pending, of several bottles that have been deemed “must haves” by writers and the WhiskeyTube community alike. So far, my palate has not aligned with those “key” bottles of bourbon that every enthusiast must have, so let’s see if this bottle is different. Coming from the Wild Turkey Distillery, today’s review is of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon Whiskey.
From the Wild Turkey Distillery website: The bold spirit of Wild Turkey is faithfully represented in every drop of this authentic barrel proof whiskey—the original “small batch” barrel proof bourbon. A blend of our finest selection of 6-, 8-, and 12-year bourbon, no water is added before bottling, for a curated sipping experience like drinking straight from the cask. The intense vanilla and exceptional mouthfeel have made this expression a legend in its own right—best enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
Unlike many of the bottles I have been reviewing, this bottle seems to be readily available in many NoCo stores. Overall, this bourbon has what I would call a “Fall” nose and palate with prominent notes of Thanksgiving (vanilla, apple, and baking spices). Although these are all notes I typically love, in this bottle I found these notes and flavors not to be balanced and often fought each other for the spotlight; rather than completing each other. Unfortunately, I must be a bourbon snob, as once again I did not find this bottle to be stellar like many others do. But as always, my palate might differ from yours, so please do not let this review stop you from at least trying this at either your friend’s house or a local bar. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Vanilla, Oak, Caramel, All Spice or Baking Spice, Apple, and Citrus
- Palate: Vanilla, Apple, Peanut, Oak, and Baking Spice
- Finish: Medium with Heat on the Back of the Tongue. Notes of Sweet Vanilla, Baking or Rye Spice, and Lasting Dry Oak
- 2022 MSRP: $45
- 2022 National Average: $65
- Proof: 112.8 Proof
- My Rating: Mix It! (Great Stater Whiskey or Daily/Weekly Mixer)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
