While browsing the shelves of one of our local stores, I came across a beautifully stout, unique, and unique green labeled bottle of straight rye whiskey. At first, I did not recognize the bottle, but then I realized I was holding a bottle from an old YouTube Review The Bourbon Junkies did on this bottle. Remembering this is one of the bottles of rye which made them change their mind on ryes as bourbon drinkers, I decided I should try this for myself as well. Coming from the Heaven Hill Distillery, today’s review is of Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey.

From the Heaven Hill Distillery website: First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville Rye, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by Prohibition. The brand reemerged after Prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry’s production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill Distillery keeps this historic Maryland mark alive.

There are a handful of YouTube reviewers and writers that I often follow regularly and find myself purchasing bottles they recommend. I am thankful I remembered watching the above review of Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey by the Bourbon Junkies, as this bottle did not disappoint. This delectable and delightful pour with an excellent nose and palate is also a very obtainable straight rye whiskey found on almost every store shelf in Northern Colorado. Overall, this bottle should become staple rye on everyone’s bar or shelf. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Obvious Upfront Rye Spices with Subtle Notes of Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Orange Citrus, and Red Vine Licorice.
  • Palate: A Bit of Heat with Rye Spice, Vanilla, Brown Sugar, Oak, Undefined Citrus, and Sweet Candy (Perhaps the Carry a Through of Red Vine Licorice)
  • Finish: A Lovely Medium to Long Kentucky Hug Ending in Traditional Rye Spice, Vanilla Sweetness, and Slight Dry Oak
  • 2023 MSRP: $49
  • 2023 National Average: $65
  • Proof: 110
  • My Rating: Drink it! (Solid Rye to Always keep in you bar)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
