While out Bourbon hunting in NoCo last month we decided to stop by a liquor store in Loveland, CO that had recently changed ownership. I will admit, we were a bit trepidations to stop as we previously experienced a not so great interaction in this location. However, the new ownership has transformed this store with an excellent selection of well-priced bourbon, whisk(e)y, and scotch, and the entire staff was polite and very knowledgeable! If you happen to be in the area, make sure to visit Stone Fox Wine and Spirits.

Making this experience even better, one of the owners and then a staff member, spent quite a bit of time learning about my palate and then recommending two bottles. Both of the bottles were from local distillers, as this was one of my goals for tastings in 2022, and in turn, I will be reviewing one tonight and the second bottle next week. Tonight’s review, although local to NoCo, comes from the larger Fort Collins Old Elk Distillery; 2021 Old Elk Infinity Blend.

From the back of the bottle: Infinity Blend by Old Elk, is a testament to legacy and supreme craftsmanship. Created by Master Distiller Greg Matze, Infinity Blend is the marriage of signature Old Elk Straight Bourbon Whiskey high-malt with two classic and vintage Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskies. Utilizing 43 years of experience, Master Distiller Matze melds the rich, smooth attributes of Old Elk Straight Bourbon Whiskey with exceptional maturity notes and classic profiles of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskies. The blend transcends both time and tradition. We hope you sip back, relax and enjoy the expert blend.

This bottle is still quite easy to find on the shelves of local liquor stores in NoCo, probably due to pricing. Overall, this is one of the main reasons why I was a bit hesitant to purchase this bottle in the first place as it was quite pricy. Secondly, with the name infinity blend, I was afraid this might be the “leftovers,” or an infinity pour, from several projects; Instead, this bottle turned out to be a blend of three MGP whiskies. Nonetheless, this was a delightful whiskey, with wonderful notes on both the nose and palate with an excellent finish. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Vanilla, Oak, All Spice, Cinnamon, and Bananas
  • Palate: Spice Forward with Additional Notes of Vanilla Cream, Caramel Hard Candies, and Dry Oak
  • Finish: Medium to Long with Lingering Spices Ending in Vanilla Cream Sweetness and Dry Oak
  • 2022 MSRP: $149
  • 2022 National Average: $178
  • My Rating: Drink It! (However, Pricing can make this a bit hard to swallow)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
