Once again, while browsing the shelves of one of our local stores, my eyes wandered towards those glorious words “limited edition.” By now I should know better, but my better judgment did not prevail this time and a bottle was purchased. Today’s review is of a bottle from the north and comes from Alberta Distilleries Premium; Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye.

From the Alberta Distillers Premium website: Alberta Premium decided to release a Cask Strength in an effort to innovate within the Canadian Whisky category. With a deep history rooted in heritage and quality, Alberta Premium is proud to be a major player in the resurgence of Canadian Whiskies and Alberta Premium Cask Strength is the award winning result. It is a true reflection of what a distillery can be-we laid our cards on the table and delivered a world-class product.

Overall, I was quite disappointed with this purchase of Rye Whiskey for the price that I paid. After several sips, this product continued to remind me of a popular Canadian whiskey which my parents often used as their mixer of choice. By no means was this a horrific bottle, however, the flavor profile did not match the asking price. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Ethanol Forward with Notes of Grapefruit, Vanilla, and Herbal Tea After Airing
  • Palate: Hot! Rye Spice, Bread Dough, and Subtle Citrus
  • Finish: Quite Long ending in Rye Spice Warmth
  • 2022 MSRP: $69
  • 2022 National Average: $95
  • My Rating: Donate It (Not my cup of rye and I will donate this)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
