So yeah, I have been reading a lot of reviews online lately and came across a lot of comments on a whiskey I knew nothing about. So like many of us, my curiosity kicked in, I went on the hunt and bought a bottle. From the distillery Heaven Hill, today I am reviewing Mellow Corn Straight Corn Whiskey.
As stated from the website: Mellow Corn is produced in accordance with a unique set of regulations that define Straight Corn Whiskey. It is distilled from a mash of at least 80 percent corn and aged for four years in a once-used Bourbon barrel. Compared to the deep amber color created by the newly charred oak barrels in the production of our other Bourbons and American Whiskeys, the result of the used barrel is a lighter, straw-colored spirit.
This bottle is very easy to find in Northern Colorado and was priced at $14 in every local liquor store. Now I am not normally a snob when it comes to price, but I would be lying if I didn’t say this price made me very skeptical. Nonetheless, I bought it and tried it…
Now as I have stated previously, I will always be honest and never hold back; and with this review, I definitely did not hold back. This was an awful bottle of pure ethanol that I could not honestly recommend to anyone. Many may disagree with my opinion of this whiskey and that is the wonderful thing I love so much about bourbon and whiskey, we all have different tastes. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Ethanol and Corn
- Palate: I imagine this tastes like if I drank corn ethanol gas from the yellow pump…
- Finish: Burns!
- 2022 MSRP: $13
- 2022 National Average: $16
- My Rating: Pour It!
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
