As mentioned in the previous two reviews, I wanted to focus on reviewing a few of the products from Buffalo Trace Distillery I had left on my shelf. Although there was no reason given in past reviews, I chose to do this as these products are becoming increasingly difficult to find in NoCo. With that said, let’s continue with reviewing the ongoing hype around the Buffalo Trace Distillery with another product from their main bourbon lineup; Colonel E.H. Taylor Single, Jr. Barrel Straight Bourbon.
As found on the Buffalo Trace website: Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is widely considered one of the founding fathers of the bourbon industry, fighting for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, nearly three decades after he purchased what is now called Buffalo Trace Distillery. During his time, Taylor implemented several innovative methods still used today, including climate controlled aging warehouses. Many of the barrels selected for the E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel are aged in Warehouse C, which was built by Taylor in 1881 and proven to be an excellent aging warehouse. Each barrel is hand-picked and Bottled in Bond at 100 proof to honor its namesake.
As mentioned above, this bottle, like many from the Buffalo Trace Distillery is now nearly impossible to find in NoCo. If you do find these in the wild, expect to unfortunately pay 3-4 times higher than MSRP. This bottle, along with the other I have on my shelf from a year ago, was overpriced at $129 and $169 at different stores in Fort Collins. Although I do not typically recommend paying over MSRP for bourbon, this is a bottle I personally believe might be worth it if you have a chance. Nonetheless, now having owned, enjoyed, and reviewed this bottle, I will be hard-pressed to pay over $110 for this bottle again. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Classic Bourbon notes of Oak, Vanilla, and Brown Sugar. Subtle hints of Bubblicious Gum and ethanol
- Palate: Front forward Vanilla moving to flavors of Oak Barrel, Raisins, Brown Sugar, and Butterscotch
- Finish: Medium in length, with continued dry notes of Oak Barrel, Leather, and ending on sweetness; Perhaps the Butterscotch continuing on
- 2022 MSRP: $60
- 2022 National Shelf Average: $489
- My Rating: Drink It!
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
