Well here I go and why not start my reviewing with a bottle that might stir the pot a bit: Eagle Rare, by Buffalo Trace Distillery. This Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is 90 proof, has an age statement of no less than ten (10) years, and boasts a proud heritage on the back of the bottle:

By practice, and protected by law, no other distilled spirit adheres to standards as strict as those established for Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. And few other whiskeys can offer even a glimpse of the great whiskey making found in Eagle Rare.

I will be very candid and make the statement that this is indeed my weekly sipper; when I can find a decent-priced bottle that is. Unfortunately, as many of us in the bourbon community know, this bottle has become an allocated Buffalo Trace product that can be nearly impossible to find in certain parts of the U.S.

Here in Colorado, Eagle Rare can be found relatively easily from October through December. I have been lucky enough to purchase a bottle of this straight bourbon whiskey for as low as $32 and have spotted bottles for as high as $75. On average, a person can typically find a bottle for around $45 if they are willing to go hunting in their local liquor stores. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Deliciously sweet but truly one-note. Subtle hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and honey.
  • Palate: Easy sipping, sweet, notes of toasted and very mild oak.
  • Finish: Dry with a lingering sweetness that hugs you like a warm and cozy fireplace.
  • MSRP: $30
  • National Average: $65
  • My Rating: Drink it!

As I will always end my reviews with, please remember drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
