I truly am not a fan of releasing reviews for bad whiskey, but when I spend money on a bottle, I often feel obligated to then provide my opinion. With that said, after last week’s not-so-great review, I wanted to highlight an amazing bottle from that same distillery that was recently released. Today’s bottle comes from the Thirteenth Colony Distillery and is their amazing bottle of Thirteenth Colony Cask Strength Southern Rye Whiskey.
Bottle Information
From the 13th Colony Distillery website: Our first-ever, small-batch Cask Strength Southern Rye Whiskey answers popular demand for our flagship Southern Rye at cask strength — and Batch #1 won’t disappoint. Featuring the French Oak spirals for which Southern Rye is known, this cask strength rye boasts a rich, deep flavor that drinks below its proof point and holds up 13th Colony’s promise: it’s worth drinking slow.

This bottle was relatively available when first released, and can still be found in a few select stores across NoCo. Overall, this nose brings me back to my childhood with notes of Dad’s Root Beer Barrel Candy. Additionally, notes of chocolate mint, vanilla, fruits, and rye spice can be found throughout the experience, and make this a damn good rye whiskey! With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Dad’s Root Beer Barrel Candy, Mint, Brown Sugar, Vanilla, and Rye Spice
- Palate: Rye Spice, Brown Sugar, Chocolate Mint, Vanilla, Dark Fruits, and Slight Sweet Oak
- Finish: Medium to Long with Notes of Rye Spice, Dark Fruit, and Slight Chocolate Mint
- My Rating: Save It! (This is damn good, and there is not much more to say. A must try!)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
