While on our adventure to Kentucky in 2024, I thought we would actually leave the state without purchasing any bottles. Well, then we stopped at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. about three hours before our flight out. Next thing we knew, we were trying to figure out how to fit three bottles in our suitcases; thankfully I always travel with bottle bags. Today’s review is one of those bottles from James B. Beam Distilling Co. and is Old Overholt Cask Strength Straight Rye Whiskey.

From the back label of the bottle: Our second annual release – a single year of our finest whiskey in every single drop. In 2012 we laid down rye for extended aging. Eleven years later we curated the best to be blended and bottled from four distinct Warehouse: M, J, F, & 5 – cask strength and unfiltered. This Kentucky style rye is the result – spice, depth, and unmistakable Overholt charter.

With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Distiller: Distilled and Bottled by James B. Beam Distilling Co.
  • Mash Bill: Undisclosed
  • Proof: 107.4
  • Age: 11
  • Year: 2024

This is a bottle that we never saw released in NoCo, and even a year later, we have yet to see it show up. I am definitely glad we chose to stop at James B. Beam last minute before hopping on the plane as this is a bottle that I hope they continue to release in the future. Overall, this has your typical Beam nuttiness with a pleasant balance of bourbon notes of red fruit, vanilla, and brown sugar mixed with rye spices. This is a bourbon drinker’s rye whiskey and is a damn fine pour! With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Typically Beam Nuttiness, Rye Spice, Red Fruit, Vanilla, Brown Sugar, and a bit of New Oak
  • Palate: Red Fruit, Citrus, Brown Sugar, Vanilla, Oak, Slight Nuttiness, Rye Spice, and Baking Spice
  • Finish: Medium to Long with Sweet Notes of Dry Oak and Rye Spice
  • My Rating: Drink It! (This is a bourbon drinker’s Rye Whiskey and is a damn fine pour!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
