Happy Halloween! For those with kids, cheers and good luck tonight, and for those without, like us, cheers and enjoy a nice Friday night pour. While up at a business conference in Breckenridge this past summer, a few of us were able to sneak away for a couple of hours and visit  @breckdistillery; which was a first for me! It was an amazing location, the restaurant and food were incredible, and the crew pouring samples was fantastic! I will definitely be taking Mrs. Bourbon Bossman back here sooner than later. Today’s review comes from the Breckenridge Distillery and is their Breckenridge Dark Arts Whiskey.

Bottle Information

From the Breckenridge Distillery website: A pioneering American Single Malt Whiskey, utilizing dark specialty malts and introducing them into standard malt mash. At the sacrifice of high yields, intentionally overpowering flavors such as over-ripe green apple, cacao, and chocolate dazzle the palate. We pushed the malt to the boundaries, purposefully off-balancing the undertones of bitter orange peel, angular oak, caramel, and green coffee cherries. Delightfully finishing with subtle essences of seaweed and sea salt. Up to ten years in a combination of new American oak and used bourbon casks has developed a singular and satisfying whiskey experience.

Being a Colorado Distillery, we have seen many bottles of Breckenridge Bourbon in the NoCo area. However, we have never seen this particular bottle on a shelf in our local stores, which leads me to believe it is a distillery-only release. Overall, this is an excellent American Single Malt Whiskey, and that is not something I typically say. With great notes of dark chocolate, orange peel, and spices throughout, this is definitely a bottle I am happy I chose to pick up and will pull out and share on special occasions. However, it is a damn pricey bottle, and I am not sure I would purchase it again if given the opportunity. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Malt, Dark Chocolate, Cherry, and Orange Peel
  • Palate: Dark Malt Chocolate Balls, Orange Peel, Red Fruit, Oak, Vanilla, and Baking Spice
  • Finish: Medium with Notes of Malt Chocolate, and Nutmeg
  • My Rating: Drink It! (This is an excellent American Single Malt Whiskey, and that is not something I typically say…)
  • Side Note: I decided to pair this with the Reese’s Pieces just for fun. The candy really brings out the red fruit on the nose but unfortunately overpowers the palate and only highlights the spice from the baking spice. Not bad, but not good… I would pass on pairing this.

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
