These Manic Monday Reviews will be short and sweet. There will be basic background information, a bottle review, and will be posted irregularly; unlike the weekly Friday reviews. These reviews will focus on older or past releases, single barrel releases, bottles that were lost or forgotten on my shelf, or whenever I just want to focus on the bourbon, not the write-up. With that said, today’s review is of Penelope Tokaji Cask Finish.

Bottle Information

From the Penelope Bourbon website: Tokaji Cask Finish is our third installment in our Cooper Series which takes our straight whiskeys on a world tour, pairing Penelope with wine casks from the finest wine making regions. Rich and decadent, Tokaji Cask Finish captures the late harvest notes of the Tokaji wine from Hungary, once dubbed the “wine of kings” by Louis XIV.

  • Distiller: Bottled by Penelope Bourbon Bottling Company
  • Mash Bill: 95% Rye and 5% Malted Barley
  • Proof: 106
  • Age: 8
  • Year: 2024
  • MSRP: $89
  • 2025 National Average: $99
  • Official Website

With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Holy Spearmint! Additional Notes of Honey, Vanilla, Oak, and Rye Spice
  • Palate: Rye Spice, Vanilla, Oak, Spearmint, Brown Sugar, and Honey
  • Finish: Medium with Rye Spice, Honey and Sour Oak
  • My Rating: Mix It! (An overall good whiskey, but the Tokaji Cask Finish is a bit too overpowering for my nose and palate…)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
