The last few reviews have once again focused on one of my favorite distilleries, Redwood Empire. Dear to my heart, and having grown up on the Mendocino Coast and in the heart of the California Redwoods, it is always nice to find products from close to home. All I have to say, is I continue to look forward to products released from this distillery. Today’s review comes from the Redwood Empire Distillery and is their bottle of Redwood Empire Van Duzen Straight Rye Whiskey.

Bottle Information

From the Redwood Empire Whiskey website: A testament to our passion, patience and pioneering spirit. Our small lot series allows us to continue our spirit of experimentation by applying our hard-won house style to products with a specific focus. This straight rye whiskey is in a league of its own.

  • Distiller: Distilled and Bottled by Redwood Empire Distilling
  • Mash Bill: 67% Rye, 31% Malted Barley, and 2% Wheat
  • Proof: 94

  • Official Website

When these bottles were first released, they were quite difficult to find in the NoCo area. With more expansion into the area, I have started to see more of the Redwood Empire products regularly available on the shelf. Overall, this was yet another unique release from Redwood Empire that you need to at least try. Is this the most amazing rye whiskey I have ever had, nope. But it is not your typical rye whiskey and might be one the the top unique ryes I have had. Also, do not forget to flip the bottle for a special easter egg on the front label! With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Vanilla, Rye Spice, Bread/Yeast, Malt, and a Slight Milk Chocolate
  • Palate: Malt Chocolate, Rye Spice, Black Pepper, Vanilla, and Bready/Doughy
  • Finish: Short to Medium With Distinct Ending Notes of Malt and Chocolate
  • My Rating: Mix It!/Drink It! (This is definitely not a typical rye whiskey… but I kinda like it)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
