Some of my favorite memories of this hobby have been when I chose to take a chance on a brand or bottle I had never seen or heard of before. Often when we are out hunting for that next popular release, I get tunnel vision and forget to take a moment, step back, and look at everything on the shelf around us. Today’s review comes from one of those moments when I took a second to let a bottle I had never seen before catch my eye and is of Frank August Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Bourbon is America’s native spirit, but as intrinsically steeped in the American experience as bourbon is, it has predominantly had one story; one of origin. Frank August exists to evolve the identity of bourbon by uniting authenticity with modernity. Taking the best of where we’ve been and projecting those ideals into where we have yet to go. As I mentioned above, this is a bottle I have not seen in previous years, however, it now seems to be available in several stores across NoCo. I would say this is a hidden gem that most do not know about, as there are still a few bottles left at some of the regular stores I visit. Overall, the only thing missing from this bourbon is a bit more of a finish. Otherwise, the traditional flavors mixed with a bright fruitiness makes this a damn good solid bourbon that I will purchase again! With that said, let’s get our taste on!

• Nose: Caramel, Fruit (Apple), Vanilla, Toasted Oak, and Baking Spice
• Palate: Vanilla, Caramel Apple, Brown Sugar, Baking Spice, and Oak
• Finish: Short but Sweet with Notes of Vanilla, Baking Spice, and Oak
• My Rating: Drink It! (The only thing missing from this bourbon is a bit more of a finish.)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
