Over the past few months I have read and watched quite a few reviews about the three whisk(e)y and bourbons produced by Jos. A. Magnus & Co. As I typically do before purchasing a bottle over $60, I spent time researching these products, their taste profiles, and what is considered fair pricing in Northern Colorado; to ensure I do not overpay or pay secondary pricing. In turn, after deciding these bottles were right up my alley, I headed out to see if I could find one of them in NoCo. Thus today, I am reviewing Joseph Magnus Triple Cask Finished Straight Bourbon Whiskey “…crafted using the same techniques as Jos. A. Magnus 100 years ago.”
From the Jos. A. Magnus & Co. website: Joseph Magnus Bourbon [is] rich deep flavors with notes of orange citrus, dried dark fruits, and vanilla. A marriage of straight bourbon whiskey aged in white oak barrels and finished in Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and cognac casks.
Now I know there is an ultimate fascination out there among bourbon lovers and enthusiasts alike with many of the Jos. A. Magnus & Co.’s bourbons. Even though their triple cask bourbon is a bit less sought after, it was as equally hard to find. Over the last two years of bourbon hunting across Northern Colorado, we have only seen this product we are reviewing today from Jos. A. Magnus & Co. and unfortunately only two bottles of it.
Overall, this triple cask-finished straight bourbon whiskey is an average to a slightly above-average bottle of bourbon. For me, I did find this bourbon a bit too dry on the palate, and in my opinion, it is a bit overpriced of a bottle. This is a delightful pour nonetheless, that I would recommend trying at least once at a bar and then perhaps consider purchasing a bottle if at or under MSRP. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Brown Sugar, Vanilla, Dark Fruits, Stewed Cherries, Citrus, and Slight Ethanol
- Palate: Vanilla, Cacao Chocolate, Dark Fruits, Sweet Sherry, and Baking Spices
- Finish: Medium and Quite Dry. Hints of Tobacco Leaf, Oak, Dark Fruits, and Lingering Baking Spices
- 2022 MSRP: $89
- 2022 National Average: $124
- My Rating: Mix It!
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
