During the fall of 2021, Mrs. Bourbon Bossman and I were hunting in one of our local stores and we came across two bottles we were not familiar with. Unfortunately, due to the cost of these two bottles, I chose to purchase only one at the time and it ended up making my top 5 bottles of 2021; Bomberger’s Declaration Batch#21E1350.

However, in case I have not mentioned it enough, Mrs. Bourbon Bossman is an amazing partner in crime! In her true love for me, she went back to that local store and purchased the second bottle the next day. Thanks to her I was able to enjoy this wonderful second bottle of whiskey coming from the Michter’s Distillery; Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey.

As stated on the Michter’s website: Shenk’s is a Sour Mash Whiskey made with a substantial amount of rye. Following the success of the 2019 and 2020 releases where some Chinquapin (Quercus muehlenbergii) oak barrels were used during maturation, the 2021 release also includes use of this oak. The wood has been naturally air dried and seasoned for over three years and the Chinquapin oak has been charred at various char levels for the aging of some of the whiskey. This year’s release has resulted in a balanced whiskey with an elegant body and finish.

Shenk’s Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey is a delightful bottle that I would recommend anyone try if they have a chance at a bar. As for purchasing this bottle, it will be hard to find in Northern Colorado, I assume most other states too, and in today’s bourbon world it might cost you your rent; but if it is priced at MSRP do not pass on it! Either way, I am still very pleased that a chance was taken on this bottle and I look forward to either trying it at a bar or hunting it down at the right price this year. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Cinnamon Sweetness, Raisins, Vanilla, and Slight Brown Sugar
  • Palate: Strong Cinnamon Lingering to Oak and Minimal Dark Cherries. Quite Unimpressive.
  • Finish: Medium Finish, Oakiness and Rye Spices
  • 2022 MSRP: $79
  • 2022 National Average: $247
  • My Rating: Drink it! (Or Maybe Pour it Over Ice)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
