Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Every year there are special and limited releases by several major distilleries that Reviewers and WhiskeyTubers are sent that unfortunately majority of the public is unable to obtain. For the last two years I have read about and watched several people enjoy the orange-labeled special release from Jack Daniels, and finally, this year in 2024, I was able to find one in the wild at MSRP, but there is a big caveat to that. Today’s review comes from the Jack Daniel’s Distillery and is their special release of Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8.

Bottle Information

From the Jack Daniel’s website: Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8 starts with Jack Daniel’s traditional Tennessee Whiskey mash bill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. After distillation, the whiskey was charcoal mellowed and entered into new, charred American white oak barrels in September of 2013 to mature on the fifth and sixth floors of Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8. After maturation at the distillery’s highest elevations, this expression was bottled at barrel strength with proofs ranging from 122 to 137.5.

Most years I have been able to find the Jack Daniels Special Releases in NoCo, except for the Coy Hill releases. However, this year I was given the opportunity to purchase the Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8 at MSRP, $79.99, from one of the local stores I visit; but as mentioned above with a caveat. This bottle was a package deal that if you purchased a bottle of the 1898 Benriach 25-Year-Old, you could choose from a bottle of Jack Daniels Coy Hill, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, or a King of Kentucky.

Although this was quite a pricy package deal, to me it was well worth it and although I am not normally a fan of scotch, the 1898 Benriach 25-Year-Old is damn good. Overall, this is definitely a top 3 whiskey of the year for me, if not the top whiskey of the year. This is a beautiful release that balances vanilla sweetness and rye spiciness with a finish that lasts all night long! I do not know what else to say, other than damn, this is so good. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

• Nose: Brown Sugar, Vanilla Cream Frosting, Caramel, Spiced Sauteed Apples, Rye Spice, and Sweet Oak
• Palate: Rye Spice, Vanilla, Toffee, Sweet Oak, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, and Branch’s Chewy Caramels
• Finish: Long… Beautiful… Colorado Winters Hug with Notes of Drying Oak, Sweet Vanilla Cream Frosting, and Rye Spice
• My Rating: Save It! (Well…Damn… I do not know what else to say, so enough said!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
