Although not new to most, just recently I have been introduced to a distillery out of Las Vegas. This started by receiving a signed bottle from an ADHD Whiskey for a Patreon raffle and then purchasing another one so I could try it without opening the signed bottle. Since then, I have purchased an additional bottle of their bourbon and then the bottle of rye that we are reviewing today. Thus, today’s review comes from Nevada Distilling Co, LLC, and is one of their newer releases; Smoke Wagon Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey.
From the Nevada Distilling Co, LLC website: Distilled from a traditional rye mash bill consisting of 51% rye and 49% corn. A high percentage of corn adds a nice rich sweetness that balances out the flavor notes of Rye’s big black pepper and cinnamon spice. Creating a flavor profile that starts off creamy, rich with fruit and candy flavor notes that has a big, bold, complex spicy finish that lingers for an eternity.
This is a newer bottle in the Colorado market, so availability in NoCo is still a bit unknown, but I am starting to see more of these on the shelves in different stores. I was unfortunately disappointed with these bottles for several reasons, with number one being the price I paid, $100, for a Bottled-in-Bond product. Now let me state that I love Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered, so I do not have a bias when it comes to the bottler. For those who do not know, Smoke Wagon does not distill their bourbon, whiskey, or rye, but purchases it from MGP and then ages and bottles it in Las Vegas.
Overall, I found this bottle lacking a nose, very thin, hard to find notes on, and the flavor profile very watered-down and lacking those vivid rye flavors I was hoping for. I would recommend trying this before buying this, and might even verge on just recommending you pass on this bottle and instead buy one of their amazing bourbon bottles. With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Thin Notes of Baking Spice, Vanilla, and Citrus
- Palate: Simplistic Notes of Baking Spice and Sweet Vanilla But Drinks Quite Hot For 100 Proof
- Finish: Medium with Lasting Notes of Baking Spice, Vanilla, and Dry Oak with A Lingering Mouth Heat
- 2022 MSRP: $69
- 2022 National Average: $79
- Proof: 100 Proof
- My Rating: Donate It!/Mix It! (Lacking flavor and bit pricey)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
