As mentioned last week, while out Bourbon hunting in NoCo last month we decided to stop by a liquor store in Loveland, CO that had recently changed ownership. We definitely enjoyed our visit at Stone Fox Wine and Spirits and will return again when in the area for the excellent selection of well-priced bourbon, whisk(e)y, and scotch. Tonight’s review is of the second bottle recommended by the Stone Fox Wine and Spirits staff and comes from The Heart Distillery; Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey.

From the Heart Distillery website: The Heart Distillery’s small batch Bourbon is a rare gem that stands tall amongst giants. Inviting aromas of oak, warm vanilla, and decadent caramel swirl with sweet candied orange and rich plums. The delivery is masterful – silky and full, with slight notes of lingering char playing with the complex sweetness and spice. The finish greets you as an old friend, gracefully revisiting all of the flavors and aromas that met you with the first sip. At full barrel proof, you can sip full-strength in the same way our distillers do when sampling from the barrel, or you can add water to reduce the proof exactly to your liking. An excellent choice for sipping on its own or mixing into a classic cocktail.

Having won Double Platinum and Best in Category during the 2022 ASCOT Awards, I was quite excited about enjoying this bottle. It is still easy to find on the shelves of most local liquor stores in NoCo but it might be near impossible to find outside of Colorado at this time. Overall, this bourbon has a spicy, warm, and sweet palate that might intimidate an unseasoned high-proof bourbon adventurer. However, please do not be scared, as this amazing cask-strength bourbon ends in an astounding Colorado winter’s hug that will keep you warm on the coldest of snowy nights. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

• Nose: Cherry, Oak, Rye Spices, Orange Zest, Vanilla, But a Bit of Ethanol
• Palate: Vanilla, Oak, Stewed Cherries, Rye Spice, and Oak
• Finish: Medium to Long with Sweet Vanilla Cream and Dry Oak
• 2022 MSRP: $79
• My Rating: Save It! (Could this is a contender for Bourbon of the Year?!?!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
