While out on the hunt bourbon about six months ago, we came across a bottle with an absolutely gorgeous label. Upon investigating this bottle a bit more, I fell in love with the story of this distillery and their efforts towards the Redwood Empire. Full disclosure, this is likely because I was born and raised on the Mendocino Coast and in the heart of the Coastal Redwoods. Coming from Redwood Empire Distilling, today we review Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Rye.

As stated on their website: Named after the fastest-growing Redwood in the world, Emerald Giant is a fan favorite in the Rye world. We started with a mash-bill of 95% premium rye and aged it for over 3 years in new charred oak barrels. Spicy with an exceptionally smooth finish, it is a great choice in your classic whiskey cocktails.

This gem of a rye whiskey is still quite elusive in NoCo as we have only seen this bottle at one store in Fort Collins. Nonetheless, if you come across this bottle in the wilds of Colorado, do not hesitate to pick it up! At $39, this is a steal and gives many of the higher-end rye whiskies in my collection a run for their money. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Rye Spices, Citrus, Oak, Vanilla and Clove
  • Palate: Rye Spices, Light Oak, Citrus (Mainly Grapefruit), and Sweetness (Almost Fruit-like)
  • Finish: Medium to Long spice in the back of the throat with lingering vanilla and citrus flavors
  • 2022 MSRP: $39
  • 2022 National Shelf Average: $45
  • My Rating: Drink it! (Amazing Value and Stellar Rye Product)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
