Well, this is a first for one of my reviews, but I truly knew it was bound to happen. As I mentioned in my second blog post, we have all watched or read a review by someone else or we were super excited that we just found this year’s special limited release and when we go to taste it… well shit, that was just disappointing. Unfortunately, this was my feeling with this week’s review of the collaboration blend between George Dickel and Leopold Bros.

As stated from the website: George Dickel has teamed up with the Leopold Bros to produce an innovative rye whisky offering. The release blends George Dickel’s column still rye produced at Cascade Hallow Distillery with Leopold Bros’ Three Chamber Rye to recreate a historic style. This union between column distilled rye and Three Chamber distilled rye turns back the hands of time, returning to an era that saw heavy-bodied rye whisky served at bars and saloons throughout America. The Cascade Hollow component of this blend is a never-before released traditional column still rye.

Although difficult to find at first, this bottle has blossomed and is a relatively easy bottle to find in Northern Colorado. Found in nearly every local liquor store I walk into, prices typically range from a low of $89 in large chain stores to an unreasonably high of $169 in some of the smaller stores I purchase from.

Although this bottle was not my cup of tea, I always encourage others to try it for themselves because you might love it. I will not give up on this bottle and will wait a few additional weeks to see if it opens up a bit more; maybe even add some ice or water. You never know what that second-tasting experience might bring, so always be willing to give a good bottle the chance it deserves. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Butterscotch, Green Apples, Gummy Bears, Rye Spices, Caramel, and Pickles?!?
  • Palate: Strong Oak, Vanilla, Caramel, Rye Spices, and Dried Fruits.
  • Finish: Short to Medium oak finish with rye spices on the tongue.
  • 2022 MSRP: $110
  • 2022 National Average: $191
  • My Rating: Mix It!

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
