Over the past few years, I have become a fan of the different bourbon and rye releases from Orphan Barrel. However, I have not become a fan of the continued rise in the cost of these same bottles. That being said, I did pony up and decided to purchase their most recent release, but I might be slightly regretting this decision now. Today’s review comes from the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. and is their new release of Orphan Barrel Fanged Pursuit 17-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Bottle Information

From the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Co. website: Influenced by the untamed spirit of Kentucky’s Bourbon Heartland, this 17-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey embodies the elusive yet daring nature of its namesake: the bobcat.

Represented by the watchful lone bobcat that silently prowls the outskirts of the Bluegrass State distilleries, this extraordinary Fanged Pursuit emerges only after years of patient, undisturbed maturation in charred American Oak Barrels.

The bobcat’s stealthy, deliberate movements reflect the aging process of this bourbon—unfolding with deliberate, measured precision, and a deep connection to its surroundings to reach its fullest potential. Just as sightings of a bobcat are rare, appearing only at dawn or dusk, Fanged Pursuit is a once-in-a-lifetime bourbon—crafted for a single release, never to be made again.

  • Distiller: Bottled by OB Spirits Co.
  • Mash Bill: Undisclosed
  • Proof: 92
  • Age: 17
  • Year: 2025
  • MSRP: $210
  • 2025 National Average: $TBD
  • Official Website

Typically these releases are easily found across Colorado and specifically in NoCo stores. Yet, this seemed to be the only bottle we have seen this year, and thankfully it was priced at MSRP; yet that previous statement is debatable. Overall, I am disappointed with this release and the price I regrettably paid for it. Now, this is not to say it is a terrible bourbon; it is actually an above-average bourbon with an amazing age statement. However, if you do not like the strong influence of sweet oak, this will not be a pour you enjoy. With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Fruit Forward (Raspberry and Cherry), Cinnamon, Vanilla, Oak, and Caramel… Beautiful Nose
  • Palate: A Bit Lacking… Heavy Sweet Oak, Cinnamon, and a Slight Nondescript Red Fruit
  • Finish: Medium with Notes of Sweet Oak Tannins and Cinnamon
  • My Rating: Mix It!/Drink It! (I like oak… but if you do not like oak, this will not be a pour for you)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!

  1. This sounds like something that I would totally enjoy —- however the local price on this bottle is $259 + tax, so I won’t be buying it!
