This review should be no shock to anyone if they saw Bourbon Bossman’s Top 5 Bourbons and Ryes of 2023. Being it was my 40th Birthday late last month, I thought I would celebrate it again by officially reviewing a bottle I have always been in love with. I was a bit delayed on posting since I was still highlighting Redwood Empire, but oh well that happens sometimes. This amazing rye was number 1 on my list last year, and I believe will retain that spot for quite a while. Coming from the Michter’s Distillery, and after a long two-year wait, today’s review is of Michter’s 10-Year Kentucky Straight Rye (2023).

Bottle Information

From the Michter’s website: One of our most limited production items, Michter’s 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye continues the legacy of America’s first whiskey variety (rye) from America’s first whiskey company (Michter’s, originally known as Shenk’s). After a nearly three year absence from the market, Michter’s then Master Distiller Willie Pratt finally gave the green light for the re-release of Michter’s 10 Year Straight Rye in April 2014.

  • Distiller: Michter’s Distillery
  • Mash Bill: Undisclosed
  • Proof: 92.8
  • Age: 10 Years
  • Year: 2023
  • MSRP: $175
  • 2024 National Average: $300
  • Official Website

This last year’s bourbon and rye season we saw several of these bottles throughout NoCo, however, all but this one were priced 3-4 times higher than MSRP. Thankfully, a newer store in our area had this beauty sitting on the shelf behind the counter priced under MSRP and they were willing to sell it! This was one of the first ryes I reviewed and it is hard to believe that was over two years ago now on Christmas Day of 2021. Overall, this is such an amazing rye whiskey and was well worth the two-year wait to finally find a bottle! With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Vanilla, Rye Spice, Caramel, Butter Cream, Red Fruit (Apple) and Bazooka Bubble Gum!
  • Palate: Vanilla, Butter Cream, Rye Spice, Slight Red Fruitiness, Honey, and Dry Oak
  • Finish: Long Colorado Winter’s Hug with Notes of Vanilla, Rye Spice, and Dry Oak
  • My Rating: Save It! (Well worth the two-year wait since last tasting it!)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
