Living in Colorado I often hear bourbon and whiskey enthusiasts state that this is one of the up-and-coming regions for whiskey. I have been trying to put an extra effort this year to try as many Colorado Distilleries as possible, but have yet to find an amazing bottle with the exception of one. Today’s review is from that one exception, from the Old Elk Distillery, today’s bottle is the new 2023 release of Old Elk Cigar Cut.
From the Old Elk website: Inspired by the warm glow of a smoldering fire as well as the popular pairing of whiskey and cigars. Carefully selected blend combines the ‘best of the best’ from our Cask Finish series. Excellent paired either with your favorite cigar or standalone as your new favorite nightcap.
Old Elk Cigar Cut is a select composite blend of Old Elk cask finish products including those awarded gold at the 2021 Beverage Testing Institute: Old Elk Sherry Cask Finish: 94 Points/Old Elk Cognac Cask Finish: 92 Points/Old Elk Port Cask Finish: 92 Points. Sherry and Armagnac casks provide a rich color and complex flavor notes such as leather. The Port and Cognac casks provide a smooth, velvety and full flavor with spiced dark fruit notes.
I have not seen this bottle around NoCo, except at Wilbur’s Total Beverage located in Fort Collins. At the time of writing this, there were still two bottles left, but that might not be the case anymore. Overall, this is an excellent blended whiskey when paired with a cigar that highlights those typical bourbon flavors. However, I would shy away from recommending this whiskey neat or even over ice, as the flavors alone are a bit harsh and become sharp rather than well-rounded. If you are a person who enjoys cigars, I would say this is a must-try whiskey! With that said, let’s get our taste on!
- Nose: Brown Sugar, Vanilla, Red Fruits (Raspberry, Red Delicious Apple, and Cherry), Figs, and Oak
- Palate: Vanilla, Caramel, Cherry, Baking Spice, and Dry Oak
- Finish: Medium to Long Colorado Winters Hug with Notes of Dry Oak, Leather, Vanilla, and Baking Spice
- 2023 MSRP: $120
- 2023 National Average: $150
- Proof: 110.6
- My Rating: Drink It! (Please note, this rating is neat and on it’s own. When paired with a cigar, I would rate this whiskey as a Save It!)
Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!
Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
