It may not seem like it, as I have yet to write a review on any of this company’s bottles, but I am a “fanboy” when it comes to the Bardstown Bourbon Company. When I started this bourbon adventure, one of the first bottles I bought was an eye-catching, uniquely shaped, maroon labeled Discovery Series No. 4, and I still have one bottled bunkered for a special occasion. To make up for this lack of appreciation, I will be reviewing the other Bardstown Bourbon Company bottles I have in my collection over the next several months; as many of these bottles deserve to be in the spotlight too. With that said, today’s review is on one of the most recent releases from Bardstown Bourbon Company, Discovery Series No. 8.

From the Bardstown Bourbon Company Website: All our Discovery Series releases push the boundaries of whiskey innovation, but Series #8 takes the program to a new level with our most complex creation to date. We start with an artfully crafted blend of Kentucky Bourbon, two Indiana ryes, and aged Canadian whiskey. We then add a custom selection of five oak staves that were created specifically to enhance the unique flavor of our original blend. The staves provide nuances that range from French toast to vanilla to Rioja barrels. The result is a celebration of innovation and a spirit bursting with flavor.

Bardstown Bourbon Company has been quite hard to find in Northern Colorado over the past few years. However, with the increased popularity of this brand, many of my local stores are now carrying their entire lineup. Although the Discovery Series carries a bit of a hefty price tag, I would argue that this bottle is definitely worth purchasing. Overall, this bottle of Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series No. 8 is one of the best releases, in my opinion, since the Discovery Series No. 4. This bottle particularly, is very unique to the Discovery Series as once again the company has masterfully blended four whiskies, but this time with the additional step of maturing with a custom selection of oak staves; this a must have in your collection! With that said, let’s get our taste on!

  • Nose: Dark Fruits or Berries, Orange Zest, Choco Powder, Roasted Almonds, and Oak
  • Palate: Crème Brûlée, Black Berries, Brown Sugar, Baking Spice, and a Slight Nuttiness
  • Finish: Medium to Long Lingering Sweetness of Brown Sugar, Baking Spice, and Oak
  • 2022 MSRP: $139
  • 2022 National MSRP: $169
  • Proof: 114.1
  • My Rating: Save It! (The best since No. 4, maybe tied with No. 6)

Please remember, drinking bourbon is a personal adventure, so do not be afraid to drink it neat, with ice, or add some water. It’s your bourbon, you bought it, and you should enjoy it how you want to enjoy it!

Cheers! Prost! Sláinte!
